Tragic Snorkeling Fatalities Mar Marathon’s Lobster Mini Season
Marathon,
The Florida Keys community mourns the loss of two men who died while snorkeling during the highly anticipated lobster mini season off Marathon last week.
Clarence Shawver, 82, of Palm City, was found unresponsive approximately five miles off Mile Marker 60 on July 30. Despite immediate rescue efforts, Shawver could not be revived.
The following day, 61-year-old Raymond Sasser of Loxahatchee lost consciousness while snorkeling near Mile Marker 74. Emergency responders transported him to shore, but he later passed away.
Adding to the tragedy, a juvenile was injured in a separate incident involving a boat propeller. The youth was airlifted to a hospital in Miami for urgent medical care.
The lobster mini season, which allows recreational lobster harvesting ahead of the regular season, remains a popular but sometimes hazardous event attracting snorkelers and divers from across the region. Authorities reported normal enforcement activity throughout the season, including 526 resource checks and 16 court citations, but no arrests.
Officials remind residents and visitors to exercise caution while snorkeling, especially during busy times like the mini season. Wearing life jackets, snorkeling with a buddy, and adhering to boating safety laws are crucial measures to prevent further incidents.
Local emergency services continue to investigate these events and urge anyone planning to participate in water activities during lobster season to prioritize safety.
